I’m a creative by nature, a designer driven by passion, and a director by trade. I’m one of the lucky ones that gets to make his living doing the things he loves. I have been fortunate to have worked with some amazingly talented people, each of which has helped shape and guide me throughout my career.
Over the years, I have had many different titles: designer, art director, creative director, curator, machinist, photographer, lecturer, mentor, surfer, skater, musician, and my most recent is dad. Whatever my title, whatever the medium, I have always maintained a great passion for the creative process.
After receiving my BFA from the prestigious SFAI, my start in the design industry came through the skate and surf world of Southern California. In this environment of high flying action, sun and sand, image was everything. I was fortunate enough to work on some of the most culturally influential brands at the time, including Vans, TSA, Independent Trucks, Think Skateboards, and FUCT among others. The skate world offered a lot of creative freedom from the clients who not only sought to be on the bleeding edge, but to be the hand on the cutting blade. The flip side was that most of the work was done on a shoestring budget.
I moved on to DZN, The Design Group. It was there that I found a love for creating motion and interactive experiences through designing promos, print ads, websites and DVD menu interfaces for some of the largest entertainment clientele including Warner Brothers, Sony, Fox and MGM. We were among the earliest design studios to be working with the DVD format, and helped to define a new genre in which design and user interface met with home entertainment.
In 2002, I took the opportunity for a change of pace and moved to NYC. My intent was to move away from entertainment design and to pick up where I had left off with the image driven work from my surf and skate days. Before long, I was working with L’Oreal, DKNY, Anna Sui, P&G, and Coty.
As I branched out further into the boutiques and agencies in New York, I quickly found myself working on branding and design projects for television and cable networks (NBC, TNT, Spike, Fuse, IFC, HBO, ESPN and more) and ended up taking a full time position working on the on-air properties for Dennis Publishing (Maxim, Blender, Stuff and The Week magazines). While the content at Maxim was interesting, after a couple of years, the cheesecake photo shoots had lost some of their appeal. I decided to take an opportunity offered to me to head over to the world of USA Network to help visually guide the then nascent Characters Welcome brand. I have since moved on, and am currently working on visual branding and brand strategy for a variety of clients in broadcast, print and interactive.
